FENCING

Fencing
Fencing is a way to beautify your home, keep pets in and unwanted pets, and people - out, while keeping children safe and providing privacy. Low, vinyl fencing can be a pretty way to accent a front yard, while bamboo or reed fencing creates a screen for a private back deck or patio area. No matter your end goal, here are some things to consider before buying. Read on to learn more before making your fencing purchase.

Materials

Steel
Steel is both durable and decorative. Consider adding as a border to a garden for extra curb appeal.

Features:

Strong and durable
Protective coating requires virtually no upkeep.

Bamboo
Bamboo is a good option if you are looking for privacy as it creates a visual barrier between you and your neighbors. Bamboo also has a very high tensile strength, making it a long-lasting material and is great for the environment as it grows so quick.

Features:

Eco-friendly
Resists weather, rot, and termites.
Taller and thicker than reed fencing.
Stronger than wood and steel.
Provides a tropical feel.

Vinyl
Vinyl is easier to care for and always looks clean and fresh. Even in dusty areas or near traffic just a simple regular hose-down has it looking brand new again.

Features:

Relatively maintenance free
Smooth surface with no splinters or sharp edges.
Resists weather, rot, and fading.

Wood
Wood is a classic material that provides privacy as well as a great barrier to keep small children or pets safe while playing in the yard.

Features:

Can be painted or stained.
May require occasional staining or sealing to protect from weather.
If not sealed, can rot and/or warp.
Can be shaped into almost any design.

Reed/Willow/Fern
These natural products add a tropical flair to your outdoor space. If you want to keep cost and install efforts low, consider one of these three materials.

Features:

Eco-friendly* Economic alternative to bamboo* Created by weaving reeds together with rust-proof wire

Calculating Quantity - Most people try stepping it out and never get it accurate so get a tape measure and actually measure it – remember too to measure your gate and if possible draw out your yard on a piece of paper including where you want your gate(s) to be along with the desired width. Also include the height you want your fence to be and if it’s going into dirt or concrete.

Then just take a photo of your drawing and upload it on the next page.

Remember also when posting your project to include your address so contractors can see your land on google maps. This will help him/her give you a much more detailed bid.

But Before You Begin…

Check local zoning laws. In some areas Home Owners Associations and local zoning laws may have regulations pertaining to fence height, placement, and style. A conversation with your chosen contractor will work this out easily enough.

Be sure you are aware of your property line. To avoid neighborhood disputes, check property lines before measuring for your fence - you don't want to be on Judge Judy!

Talk to neighbors. Some neighbors may have specific ideas about how or if they want a fence. Try to compromise; your neighbor may even be willing to split the cost with you on that side of the fence.

Contact local utilities. For your safety and the safety of those around you, call your local utilities before drafting your fencing plan so that you do not puncture electrical, gas, or water lines. Simply call 811 to double check.

Hiring anyone to carry work in your home can be daunting. Letting strangers into your home is even more scary. While many homeowners may go into detail about pricing and materials and quality of work – they rarely ask their contractor for their license details and never ask about their possible criminal background or if their staff are felons.

For your peace of mind, all fencing contractors featured on 23HourBids.com, and their staff, have been background checked for your safety and security. Don't let anyone into your home without the 23HourBids.com seal of safety and security.
