Plumbing
Plumbing is the least glamorous part of the home – it simply brings clean water in and sends dirty water out but get these two jobs mixed up and it won’t be pretty. Plumbing, like electrics is always best left to the experts.
Plumbers are usually required when installing new appliances like washers and gas dryers or swapping out an unused bathtub for a double shower or replacing a toilet or sink – all jobs that should not be on a DIY list.
Hidden treasures within the piping system are automatic anti-scald features which are in place to protect you from your water being too hot.
Traps at each fixture keep bad smells down and harmful gases out of the home. Traps also catch hair and fingernails from blocking the main pipes as well as not letting valuables such as your wedding ring swim out to sea.
These features are built into many city’s codes and may be inspected during and after installation.
Plumbers also work with bringing gas into your home maybe to heat your water, or dry your clothes or light your fire as well as cooking your food. Gas will come into your home in one main pipe and then branched off to suit your needs.
Common plumbing problems to speak to your plumber about:
Your hot water tank – is it big enough to cater for your family?
Does your water tank have an expansion heater? An expansion tank is a safety device which prevents pipes from bursting.
How efficient is your current heater?
What type of new heater is your plumber advising and how will combustion gases be expelled from it? WIll it be direct or power vented?
Ask why it takes so long from when you turn on your hot water until hot water actually comes out of the faucet or shower head and if a circulation method would help the situation if it seems to take forever.
Remember too, while you have a plumber in your house, get him/her to do all those little jobs you’ve been putting off such as sealing that dripping faucet or leaky pipe or put a couple of outlets outside in your front or back yard.
Look also at replacing your existing under sink pipes from 1 inch to 1 and a half to 2 inch. 2 inch PVC piping will empty your sink or bath quicker whilst also preventing future clogging.
Hiring anyone to carry work in your home can be daunting. Letting strangers into your home is even more scary. While many homeowners may go into detail about pricing and materials and quality of work – they rarely ask their contractor for their license details and never ask about their possible criminal background or if their staff are felons.
